Doctor of Preventative Medicine Shares Advice on Avoiding Flu Complications

During the 2017-2018 US flu season, nearly 80,000 people died and more than 950,000 people were hospitalized due to flu and flu-related complications.

Beyond those devastating numbers, for individuals with chronic health conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and lung disease, flu infection puts them at increased risk for serious long-term complications.

We spoke with a doctor of preventative medicine about how to stay healthier this season.

Dr. William Schaffner, medical director of the National Foundation For Infectious Diseases, says the flu can be an uncomfortable experience for most of us. But for the very young, the very old and those with health issues already, getting sick can be deadly.
