Northern Michigan in Focus: Loafers Glory

When a staple of the community shuts its doors, there is often a void left behind that sometimes can never be filled.

But in Blanchard, one local business is opening its doors again and keeping tradition alive.

Corey Adkins explains in this week’s Northern Michigan in Focus.

“Loafers Glory opened in 1986. We were open for 30 years when I retired. I was retired for four years and now we are back up and running again with the help of my family,” said JoAnn Camp.

It is back! is a place that sings Christmas tradition from rooftop in Blanchard.

“We are old-fashioned tradition and that has always been my mom’s goal, and we have had wonderful Christmas,” explained Kim Smith. “There are so many memories here. We have great friends we see regularly, we make new friends every day. Our family has had wonderful traditions that have survived Loafers Glory.”

Almost everyone who works here is part of JoAnn’s family.

One of the traditions here is to remind your stomach how good their bread bowl soup is.

“Our chicken dumpling soup is huge, people love our dumpling soup in a bread bowl and it’s our favorite item they serve,” said Kim.

And JoAnn’s buttermilk pie is to die for.

“My mother makes that every day for 30 years, every morning she makes them fresh and they are sought after and regularly we sell out of them every day. She has got it down to a science,” said Kim.

It’s just kind of inspiring to see how well JoAnn and her family work hard to make traditions come true for others.

“We are definitely out of the way, so when people do seek us out we take that as such an honor that they would take the time to come and travel, and we want to give them the best service possible and hopefully that will be enough that they will want to come back and see us again,” explained Kim.

They are open Thursday through Saturday, but not on Thanksgiving.

“Out of the way? Perhaps. Out of the ordinary? Definitely,” said JoAnn
