Northern Michigan Representative Lee Chatfield Expected to be Named Speaker of Michigan House

The next Michigan Speaker of the Michigan House could be from northern Michigan.

Representative Lee Chatfield from Levering was elected to another term last night.

He is currently the Speaker Pro-Tem and is widely expected to be chosen as the new speaker on Thursday.

He would take over for outgoing speaker Tom Leonard.

Chatfield says if selected he’s looking forward to the opportunity with Republican control of the House and Senate and a Democratic governor preparing for a transition.

“There’s certainly going to be differences of opinion, it’s our duty to come together to find solutions that will move our state forward. Fixing our economy, fixing our roads should not be a partisan issue we’ve come so far in the last 8 years I’d hate to see us turn back now,” said Chatfield.

If chosen, the 30 year old Republican would be the youngest speaker in Michigan history, the first from Emmet County and the youngest speaker currently serving anywhere in the country.
