The biggest win of the night was Gretchen Whitmer winning the state’s top office over Attorney General Bill Schuette.

“Well, I guess that means we’re going to have to fix the damn roads,” said Whitmer at her victory speech Tuesday night.

It was a night of celebration that now turns to a month and a half of preparation. Whitmer will be Michigan’s next Governor.

“For the people of Michigan, for those who voted for me, I thank you for your support,” says Whitmer, “For those of you who didn’t vote for me, I want you to know I’m still going to be working for you.”

Whitmer won the race with 53 percent of the vote, enough to win but also a sign, almost half the state didn’t want her.

“As a legislator I was able to reach across the aisle and work with Governor Snyder on things like the ‘grand bargain’ and getting the lights on in Detroit,” says Whitmer, “But also things like Medicaid expansion and I think that’s a skill that I’ve honed over the years.”

Already Whitmer and Governor Rick Snyder are working together again. She visited with the Governor in his office today to talk the transition.

“This is not a Democratic governorship,” says Whitmer, “This is the Michigan governor. We are in this together.”

She won’t be able to appease everyone, nobody ever will but she says she is willing to try, if you are willing to help.

“To those who support me, and those I have yet to earn, I want you to know there is a seat at my table for everyone who is genuinely interested in solving problems,” says Whitmer, “I know we are at our strongest when we collaborate and there’s a seat at a table for everyone who wants to do that.”

Whitmer will be sworn in as Governor on January 1st.
