Voters to Decide Between Jack Bergman, Matt Morgan to Represent 1st District

From U.S. Senate to the U.S. House, there are several House races that will impact Northern Michigan.

One of the biggest is the 1st Congressional District.

Voters are choosing between Democrat Matt Morgan and incumbent Republican Jack Bergman.

It is a two year term to represent much of the Tip of the Mitt and all of the Upper Peninsula.

Congressman Bergman is the incumbent in Michigan’s 1st District.

This area historically leans Republican, and Bergman says his party is feeling energized.

Bergman says one of his top priorities is the Soo Locks.

He says he helped get the president on board to support funding for a new Soo Lock.

And as a three star lieutenant general, he also wants to work for veteran rights.

He said voting is a right our veterans fought to protect.

“We’re consumed by the election today, but those veterans fought for and gave their lives for our right to vote. So when people don’t exercise their right to vote, they are accidentally dishonoring the service of the men and women who fought for that right,” said Bergman.

Bergman also supports a strong right wing agenda, including pro-life and second amendment rights

He also wants to bring more internet access to more of our rural areas.

The Democrat vying for Jack Bergman’s seat to represent Michigan’s 1st Congressional District is Matt Morgan.

Morgan and his campaign team say they are taking advantage of every last second the polls are open, going door-to-door encouraging people to get out and vote.

You may remember during the August primary election there was an issue with Morgan’s ballot application, so he was not listed on that ballot.

Morgan secured his position on November’s ballot with close to 30,000 write-in votes.

He cast his vote Tuesday morning on Old Mission Peninsula, and afterwards hit the streets in Traverse City to remind people why he thinks he’s the best candidate to represent Michigan in Washington.

“Fix health care to make sure working families can take their kids to the doctors when their sick, so that folks that are retired don’t have to drive 70 miles to get to the hospital. We need to make sure that we’re taking care and investing in our infrastructure for today and future generations, and, most importantly here in Northern Michigan, it’s about protecting our water,” said Morgan.

Morgan also says he wants to change the bitter tone in politics.

We’ll be joining Matt Morgan for his election watch party at The Little Fleet Tuesday night.
