Northern Michigan Manufacturer Awarded $59.4 Million Contract from the Marines

“We are really excited about it, it’s something we worked really hard to win.”

On Tuesday a Northern Michigan manufacturer won a huge contract from the Department of Defense.

Armor Express in Antrim County got the close to $60 million contract from the U.S. Marine Corps.

The Northern Michigan based company will make light-weight body armor for troops.

Armor Express is already one of the top employers in Antrim County.

“The business is really growing and we are really pleased in the direction we are headed and it’s all kind of fueled by our passion to save lives,” Armor Express Chairman Matt Davis, said.

Davis says this contract adds to the growth they’ve had over the past year.

“We have a great talent pool there and the employees have been instrumental in our growth. We are excited to grow our business in the local area and we look forward to bringing down more jobs,” Davis, added.

Congressman Jack Bergman says the winning-bid speaks to the quality of the company.

“It’s a recognition by the Marine Corps who is one of the toughest customers to please because of the standards we have. It’s a recognition of the quality of small business we have here in Northern Michigan,” Rep. Bergman, explained.

The Marine Corps veteran says the defense industry is growing across Northern Michigan.

“In the past year or so, 1000 jobs, defense-related, [were] added in Northern Michigan because of the quality of companies we have here,” Rep. Bergman, added.

The sign outside Armor Express’ manufacturing facility in Central Lake shows they are looking for more workers, right now.
