Festival of the Trees Tugs On Christmas Spirit

It’s only October, but for a select few that means it’s not too early to talk about Christmas at least when it comes to fundraisers.

The Spectrum Health Foundation Festival of the Trees is right around the corner, and that means they need trees, wreathes, baskets, even non-Christmassy items, experiences, art, whatever you think will be alluring to bidders.

If you’re up to decorating, you can pick up different sized trees and wreathes for free at Patterson’s Flowers in Big Rapids.

All the money raised is going to help keep children healthy by supporting the vaccination program with elementary schools in Mecosta and Osceola counties.

Dee VanHorn, the event’s creator, says it’s a win-win for everybody.

“We know the flu for young children is extremely dangerous so they can get very ill and very sick, so it’s important we get as many children vaccinated as possible so we keep them well, but also keep the schools healthy,” VanHorn says. “We think it’s a win-win for everybody, the community wins and the children who we want to protect really get a good basis to get through the winter hopefully without being ill.”

The event is at 6 p.m. on Nov. 7 at the Holiday Inn in Big Rapids, Iniversity Ballrooms A and B. Tickets are $25 per person, and $30 at the door.

Organizers hope to have the auction items a week before the event.
