Michigan Runner Girl: A Website, A Podcast, A Community

“I just love Michigan, and I think anyone that lives in Michigan loves it, too,” said Heather Durocher.

Also loving running and writing, Heather Durocher combined them all and founded Michigan Runner Girl in 2010.

“A community of like-minded people, I guess, it started as a website and I feel like it’s really evolved over the years,” she said.

She writes blog posts about her adventures on the trails, sharing her own stories and prompting others to share theirs.

“I just wanted to celebrate that active lifestyle here in Michigan,” she explained.

Quickly drawing in other runners across the mitten state and beyond.

“I don’t know if it’s all the endorphins pumping, but we are just happy people in general and I feel like we are all striving to be the best versions of yourself, so running is more an outlet for us and it’s not a physical activity it’s a lifestyle,” Durocher explained.

Heather is a runner as of relatively recent. She just started to get on the right foot about 10 years ago.

“I kind of have that typical story of remembering gym class needing to run that mile and having side stitches,” she said. “Growing up here in Traverse City I even remember we had to run Old Glory and I just didn’t like it.”

More than finding a hobby, also finding friends through Michigan Runner Girl because Heather is a Michigan Runner Girl. Her follow runners are Michigan Runner Girls. Anyone else lacing up their sneakers is a Michigan Runner Girl, too.

“I feel so fortunate to have crossed paths literally and figuratively with all these amazing people,” she said.
