Candlelight Vigil Honors Victims of Domestic Violence in Traverse City

A moment of silence was held at the Women’s Resource Center in Traverse City.

Part of a candlelight vigil for domestic violence survivors.

The vigil is held each year during Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Organizers say it provides survivors with a safe place to tell their story.

This annual event also gives those who have lost loved ones due to abuse an opportunity to pray, and be prayed for.

Organizers say the event has grown larger each year, with more people willing to share their story.

“We’ve had vigils where people have never spoken out before and they felt compelled to stand up in this environment and share their story and so that’s the first step to healing sometimes so to have that sense of community and that sense of kindred spirit is important to survivors and their families,” Julie Schultz, executive director of the Women’s Resource Center said.
