Grand Traverse County Teens Discuss Ways to Keep Schools Drug Free

Teens from across Grand Traverse County met on Monday to talk about ways to keep their schools drug free.

It was part of the Grand Traverse County Youth Summit put on by the Grand Traverse County Drug Free Coalition.

Students talked about starting groups known as “STAND” — or Students Together Against Negative Decisions in area schools.

It would allow teens to talk with other teens about avoiding substance abuse and also bring that conversation to younger students.

“We all have our own schools, our own problems at our schools and we need to come together and find a way to fix it. I’ve seen A students just start slacking once they have done substances,” said TC West Junior Matt Mudget.

This summit comes just days after it was announced Michigan set a new record for overdose deaths from opioids and would be getting $50 million in federal money to battle the opioid epidemic.
