Screams In The Dark, Traverse City

Cryptic noises fill the air until the first scream pierces the dark.

in Traverse City has been scaring people left and right for the last 7 years. Opening Night was Friday, and it will be scaring Northern Michigan every weekend in October.

“We come every year,” Donna Kramer says. “It’s probably the coolest thing we have around here in Traverse City.”

The first haunt will have you watching your back around every corner—the asylum.

“The asylum one never disappoints me,” Donna says.

Donna and her friends make their way through in what’s become a tradition for many.

“The big circle of doom—it’s where the guys and girls make a big circle and they run through and barrel through the whole haunt screaming and crying,” Donna says.

There was something that was really loud, there was someone laying down, there was a loud noise and it really threw me off,” Donna says.

Their group stays intact. Their sanity—not so much.

Panic lingers for the second haunt, Pandemonium.

The haunts have many moving parts, but almost even more frightening are the parts that don’t move.

The actors behind the masks are the ones making the trip memorable, and while the strong eerie wind shakes the crispy leaves on the trees ahead of opening night, haunters are itching to lurk, stare and scare for those screams in the dark.
