Leg or back pain due to narrowing around the spinal canal or around the nerves has a few solutions.
Board-certified neurosurgeon Dr. Jay Jagannathan, with , says this kind of ailment is called lumbar stenosis.
Symptoms can include shooting pain down the legs, numbness and tingling, or back pain.
“Stenosis just means narrowing around the spinal canal or around the nerves and lumbar stenosis is, as the name implies, narrowing around the nerves that travel out of the lower back, which is the lumbar spine,” Jagannathan says.
Typically there are two broad categories in how people experience symptoms, and the most common is leg pain. Sometimes it feels like cramping or getting a Charlie horse. Back pain is the other common symptom.
Treatments:
- Rest/anti-inflammatories
- Physical Therapy
- Steroid Injections
- Surgery
