Sign Up for Traverse City IRONMAN Opens Soon

Announced Tuesday, IRONMAN is coming to Traverse City and athletes can sign up soon. Traverse City is the second city in Michigan to host the famous triathlon. Now, it’s time to plan out all the details for the half-Ironman next summer.

The race is August 25, 2019. The route has not been finalized, but organizers say the swim will likely be in West Bay and athletes will continue on bike through cherry orchards. The triathlon will finish the 13.1 mile run through downtown Traverse City.

Paul Marek works at 9&10 News and just completed an IRONMAN this weekend. He’s already getting excited for next summer’s race.

“I had the pleasure of doing IRONMAN Wisconsin Sunday, the weekend was awesome the race was great” said Marek. “This area is perfect for an event like this, I kind of wish it was a full IRONMAN , but a half IRONMAN will be awesome, a little less taxing on the athletes.”

Traverse City IRONMAN will host more than 2,000 athletes in August, many of them will come from out of state. Some predict the race will bring more than double that number to town.

“Any time you’re adding an event of that magnitude to downtown, it’s just going to increase traffic flow so I’m all for it,” said Daniel Siderman, who owns Running Fit in downtown Traverse City. “Without a doubt, I’d expect [triathletes] to come in here, but more than anything else, whether you’re a specialty shop or not when you get people downtown, they’re going to walk around downtown.”

Triathletes say it takes at least six months to train, and people are starting to get ready.

“I’ve got friends that have never done a triathlon that are asking me what should I do to start training,” said Marek.

Sign up for the IRONMAN opens September 25.
