Hook & Hunting: Elk Hunters on Day 3 of Early Hunting Period

Almost 40,000 Michigan hunters threw their name in the ring for a chance to elk hunt, but only 200 will be lucky enough to win that opportunity.

Right now 100 hunters are on day three of the early hunt period.

So far they’ve harvested 12 elk.

Before hunters can head into the woods, they have to attend a special orientation class with the DNR.

“So they come and spend a few hours learning about how to hunt elk, because most people have never hunted an elk before. How to be successful, how to stay legal, safe, any of the disease testing that we do up there,” DNR wildlife technician, Katie Keen said.

The regulated hunting of elk is an important process for the DNR because it helps them control the population and keep track of where they’re located.
