Yoga For Beginners Part 3: Cat, Cow

9&10 Logo

Cat and cow are great beginner yoga poses—and now you can learn them from the comfort of home.

Angie Lijewski, with in Cadillac, has been demonstrating beginner yoga poses for anyone who’s been interested in learning what this practice is all about.

“Your breath is the most important thing,” she says. “In every pose, you’re always breathing, never holding your breath. And deep, long, smooth breaths. If your breath becomes short and choppy, it means you’re working too hard. A lot of times when people are stressed, they have very short breaths…Yoga helps bring that long, smooth breaths to you and relaxed breathing.”

Cat

  • Get on your knees with your hands below the shoulders and knees below the hips.
  • Round the spine up, pulling the hips in and head down.
  • Hold the pose and breathe.

Cow

  • On your next inhale, transition from cat into cow by dropping the belly and raising the head up.
  • Pull the shoulders back away from the ears.
  • Breathe.

Flow the two poses together.

  • Do a long, slow exhale into cat and long, slow inhale into cow.

Our yoga journey will continue with Lijewski in the weeks ahead. You can view more poses below, or visit .
