Vatican “Condemns Unequivocally” Pennsylvania Priest Abuse Scandal

The Vatican is breaking its silence on the grand jury report accusing priests in Pennsylvania of molesting at least a thousand children and trying to cover it up.

A Vatican spokesman is calling the accusations “criminal and morally reprehensible.”

He says the pope is treating the report with great seriousness and “condemns unequivocally the sexual abuse of minors.”

He noted that most of the reported abuse took place before 2002, that’s when the U.S. Catholic bishops adopted new policies designed to inform law enforcement of accusations and quickly remove accused clergy from office.

Pennsylvania’s attorney general says he appreciates the Vatican’s remorse.

The pope himself has not yet commented.
