Lansing Man Charged with Manslaughter After Deadly Shooting in Chippewa County

A Lansing man is charged with manslaughter after police say he shot a man inside in an Upper Peninsula cabin.

Aaron Roberts is accused of killing Kevin Belonga.

It all started after an incident in Trout Lake Township, Chippewa County on Saturday, when troopers were called to a cabin on O.J. Miller Road.

State police say when they arrived on scene and took Roberts into custody, he identified himself as “the shooter.”

Police say they secured the area and took Roberts into custody without incident, inside the cabin they found Kevin Belonga, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

In the sworn affidavit, state police say Roberts admitted to investigators that he shot Belonga.

Court documents obtained by 9&10 news also show Roberts was in the UP vacationing in Trout Lake at the time of the shooting.

Monday morning Roberts was formally charged with manslaughter and felony firearm.

State police say the incident is still under investigation.

Roberts is being held on a $100,000 bond, if convicted he could face up to 15 years in prison.
