Rabies Infected Bat Confirmed in Alpena County; Reminder to Vaccinate Pets

Another rabies-infected bat has been confirmed in Alpena County, prompting warnings from public health officials on how to avoid being exposed to the virus.

According to the health department, rabies is transmitted through bites or scratches that penetrate the skin.

So how do you protect yourself?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says it’s important to vaccinate your pets.

You should also reduce the amount of exposure your pets have to wildlife.

And of course, report any stray or sick animals to animal control, and don’t go near them.

If you are bitten by a rabid animal, health officials say it’s best to have the animal captured, euthanized and tested.

They also say you should immediately seek medical attention.
