Grand Traverse Co. Storage Unit Fire Destroys Boat, Sports Car

A fire at a storage unit in Grand Traverse County Thursday morning left a boat, truck and sports car destroyed.

Crews were called to Rennie School Road and Buckshot Drive behind Molon Excavating around 7 a.m.

When they arrived they found heavy smoke and fire coming from the roof of the storage units.

The Blair Township fire captain tells us the buildings typically have special boxes on the outside of the buildings with easy access to the building and important information so they know what is inside.

He tells us this building was bought through a third party, so the fire department did not know what was inside the unit.

“For business owners, it’s really important for their government agencies to get site plans, to get those plans reviewed and those reviews come to the fire department for that reason so we know what the contents of the building are, we have access to the building. Ultimately it keeps our firefighters safe, so that was the slight concern this morning,” said Captain Eric Darling.

The storage unit also contained commercial products for a cleaning company.

Crews are still investigating the cause.
