Man, Woman Die in Benzie County Crash

We now know a fiery Benzie County crash killed a 19-year-old woman and 21-year-old man.

We first told you about the crash Thursday night on 9&10 News at 11.

Since then, the sheriff’s office released the names of the victims.

Deputies were called shortly before 5 Thursday evening to Cedar Run and Reynolds Road in Almira Township.

They say the truck 21-year-old Tristan Clay of Lake Ann was driving did not stop at the intersection.

His truck hit the car of 19-year-old Payton Carpenter from Lake Ann.

The impact caused both vehicles to catch fire.

Both Clay and Carpenter died at the scene.

The sheriff says the age of the victims makes this investigation especially tough.

“Really never any of us are promised tomorrow, but to have to bury a child or a loved one, it’s horrific. There’s really no words to say or to make it make them feel any better, unfortunately,” Benzie County Sheriff Ted Schendel said.

Carpenter’s passenger survived the crash and was taken to the hospital.
