Teen Charged With Kidnapping, Assault in Mason County

An 18-year-old has been arrested in Mason County and charged with kidnapping and assault.

Ludington Police say Devin Martin held a 13-year-old girl against her will and tried to sexually assault her last Friday.

Ludington Police Chief Mark Barnett says 18-year-old Devin Martin grabbed the 13-year-old victim he was walking with, pulled her a short distance and tried to sexually assault her. It happened in an alley off Dowland Street in Ludington.

“The allegation is that it was a physical taking, or a forced taking from one point, a short distance away with the intent to commit that sexual assault, but I wouldn’t want people thinking there is someone running around picking people up,” said Barnett.

Barnett says Martin and the victim had met just before the alleged kidnapping and assault. Police also suspect Martin had been drinking and he’s currently considered homeless.

“It’s a very safe city, Mason County is a very safe county, but there are things, people are people, and often times they make poor decisions, terrible decisions, and do things that just aren’t right,” said Barnett.

Parents in the area like Dustin Southern say it’s troubling to learn about what happened not far from his family’s home.

“We keep an eye on our kids, we just got them walkie talkies so we could keep a closer eye on them. We didn’t even know anything was going on, we heard screaming, but we hear screaming all the time so we didn’t really think nothing of it,” said Southern.

Martin is due back in court next month.
