9&10 Logo

An emergency call for blood has been issued by the American Red Cross due to a massive blood shortage.

Any eligible donor is being asked . According to the Red Cross, someone needs blood in the U.S. every two seconds, and one blood donation can save up to three lives.

Zachary Krebs, with the American Red Cross in Big Rapids, has a few steps you can take to make sure you are ready to donate.

Tip 1: Eat Plenty of Iron Before and After

Foods rich in iron include:

  • Red Meat
  • Fish
  • Poultry
  • Beans
  • Iron-Fortified Cereal
  • Broccoli
  • Spinach
  • Raisins
  • Prunes

Foods rich in vitamin C can help your body absorb iron, but coffee, tea and other caffeinated beverages can reduce iron absorption.

Before Donation: Sleep Well, Eat Well
