AG Bill Schuettte: Discriminating Based on Sexual Orientation is Not Sex Discrimination in MI

The state attorney general says discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity is not a form of sex discrimination in Michigan.

Republican Bill Schuette, who is currently running for governor, came out with the opinion Friday.

It invalidates a state commission’s decision that discrimination of sexual orientation or gender identity is illegal under Michigan’s 1976 civil rights law.

And says only the legislature can expand those protections.

The civil rights commission made that decision in May.

Attorney general opinions are considered binding, unless they’re reversed by a court.
