President Trump Says he Misspoke About Russian Meddling During Summit

President Trump is now saying he misspoke during a news conference this week when he appeared to side with Russian President Vladimir Putin about the Russian meddling in the 2016 election.

He originally said he didn’t see any reason why it would be Russia.

“The sentence should have been: I don’t see any reason why I wouldn’t, or why it wouldn’t be Russia,” said President Trump.

The president says he agrees with U.S. intelligence assessments, which show Russia did interfere in the election and he’s working to prevent any interference in November’s midterm elections.

But the president’s comments in Helsinki ignited a firestorm of criticism from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle.

Democrats say they want more details about what happened during the two hour one-on-one between Trump and Putin in Finland.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is expected to testify before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee next week.
