Tech on Tuesday: World Emoji Day and Prime Day Problems

The digital world is celebrating two tech-themed holidays today!

Amazon Prime Day

Amazon Prime Day kicked off Monday at 3 p.m., but Amazon’s website ran into some problems.

Shoppers clicking on Prime Day links in the U.S. only got images of dogs with the words, “”Uh-oh. Something went wrong on our end.”

The online retailer says increased Prime Day web traffic caused the site to crash.

Amazon seems to have worked out the glitches, and were able to get most Prime Day links working within a few hours.

The 36-hour event was created to celebrate the company’s 20th anniversary and drive up Prime membership levels. Shoppers have until the end of the day Tuesday to snag some Prime Day deals.

World Emoji Day

Today is also World Emoji Day

The purpose of World Emoji Day is to promote the use of emojis and spread the enjoyment that they bring to all of those around us.

World Emoji Day is celebrated on July 17 because it’s the one date that is displayed in the Calendar emoji.

People can celebrate World Emoji Day on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter using the hashtag #WorldEmojiDay. There’s also a World Emoji Day Anthem, which people are encouraged to sing along to. The World Emoji Day website also suggest putting the anthem on repeat in the office today.

Another way you can celebrate World Emoji Day is by tweeting your favorite 50 emojis.

Here’s a couple of fast facts about emojis:

  • Over 900M emojis are sent every day without text on Facebook Messenger.
  • By mid-2015, half of all comments on Instagram included an emoji.
  • The biggest day for emoji usage on Messenger is New Year’s Eve.
  • 157 new emojis were approved in 2018, which brings the total number of emojis to 2,823.
  • The most popular emojis across Facebook include favorites like Face With Tears of Joy and Smiling Face with Heart Eyes, but also the Birthday Cake emoji.

People can also vote in the World Emoji Awards, which includes categories like Best New Emoji, Most Anticipated Emoji, Excellence in Emoji Use and Emoji of the Year.

This year’s winners were announced at 3:20 p.m.

The ‘exploding head’ was named Best New Emoji, while the ‘thinking face’ emoji was named 2018 Emoji of the Year.

Apple is also getting in on the celebration by previewing new emoji designs such as a kangaroo, lobster, characters with more hair options like red hair and curly hair. Apple plans on releasing more than 70 new emoji characters in an update later this year.

So take some time today to celebrate World Emoji Day by using your favorite emojis. At the very least, watch the World Emoji Day Anthem music video. You will not be disappointed!
