Mayoral Candidates for Omena Have Paws, Hooves and Wings

It sounds like the beginning of a joke—dogs, cats, a chicken, peacock and goat all got together—to run for mayor.

The Omena Historical Society is holding it’s customary mayoral race with 18 members of the animal kingdom running this year.

There is a plethora of canines and felines running, but Penny the chicken, Bert the peacock and Harley the goat spice things up.

The Omena Historical Society has photos and bios of all the candidates in the election on its website, and you can click “vote for me” under each animal’s picture. One dollar equals one vote.

The top 5 candidates in the running so far are Diablo the dog, Sweet Tart the cat, Parker and Punkin the pups and Penny the chicken.

Sally Shapiro brought the front-runner, Diablo, to the Cadillac Heritage House Headquarters to explain more about the race.

Voting takes place until 5 p.m. on Thursday—and the winner will be announced Saturday, July 21, following the Omena Village Days Parade.
