Costume Parade Kicks Off Second Day Of Alpenfest

People big and tall short and tall gathered Wednesday for the costume contest at the 54th Annual Alpenfest in Gaylord.

The parade gathered Tuesday morning at 8:30 for a contest, then the parade took its first strides at 9:00.

We saw lederhosen and dirndls of all colors and sizes.

People posed for plenty of pictures before they were judged in categories by age and family groups.

Then they took off on foot for the walking parade back to the Alpenstrasse while the band played traditional music.

About 150 people competed and walked, but the Habryl’s who’ve been coming for 30 years took home the title of best family costume.

“This year is particularly good, all my children are back and most of my grandchildren, so it’s really great,” said Lou Habryl. “We enjoy the costumes, all the festivities, it’s just a fun thing to do as a family.”

The competition ended with the world’s largest coffee break.
