Kids Takeover Downtown Traverse City at Junior Royale Parade

You could say Thursday night’s Junior Royale Parade was the “cherry on top” of a week at the National Cherry Festival.

The Junior Royale Parade featured 27 elementary schools, and each one picked a Junior National Cherry Festival Prince and Princess. The royals had crowns, sashes and everything. And lots of giggles, and well-practiced, royal waves.

They got the royal treatment by riding in thrones on homemade, themed rides with their classmates.

This year’s parade had a pretty sweet theme – candy. Each school had a creative take on a different kind of yummy treat.

The Jolly Rancher float featured kids dressed up like cowboys, or ranch hands.

The Smartie’s float had a make-shift classroom complete with a teacher and chalkboard.

The Swedish Fish looked like a real ocean and even had a bubble machine.

Hershey Kiss, M&M’s and Tootsie pops were just a few of the other floats.

Kids tossed chocolate and other candy in downtown Traverse City, and while the chocolate may have melted away, it’s clear the memories will not.
