Man Charged in Connection to 1-Year-Old Girl’s Death in Gaylord

“All of them are very difficult for us but the younger ones are the most difficult ones for us to investigate.”

State police are investigating the suspicious details surrounding the death of a 1-year-old baby in Gaylord.

Police say the infant’s mother’s boyfriend, De’Marco McCovery, brought the child to the Otsego Memorial Hospital Thursday.

They arrested McCovery that night.

We spoke with the mother who didn’t want to go on camera, but she did express how devastated she is.

She says until now she’s been living with McCovery.

De’Marco McCovery is now charged in the child’s death, accused of first degree child abuse.

That’s a felony punishable up to life in prison.

“He made admissions of what occurred that day of being the last person with this infant alive,” said Sergeant Randy Servia, Michigan State Police.

Investigators say McCovery brought the child to Otsego Memorial Hospital.

The hospital called police saying the child’s death was suspicious.

And now, state police say McCovery made several stops before going to the hospital.

“A death like this was completely preventable and certainly the family is struggling right now and it’s difficult for the whole community when you have something like this,” said Manda Bruker, chief assistant prosecuting attorney.

Right now McCovery is not allowed contact with the child’s mother and his bond is set at $500,000.

“Since it’s still under investigation. We haven’t received the full report. It is possible there could be additional charges,” Bruker said.

McCovery is due back in court for a probable cause hearing conference on July 12.

There is a gofundme page set up to help the child’s family.
