The Kalkaska County Library kicks off their free Adulting 101 class Friday afternoon and is opening it up to the public.

Their primary goal is to teach essential life skills to help better their lives in the community.

“It’s for young adults 15 through 25 and it teaches a lot of basic skills,” says Sarah Genereaux-Maddox, technology, and outreach librarian.

Giving tips and tools to help young adults like Stacy Bernet.

“If you just want to learn about growing up, you just kind of have to find your own ways of doing it,” says Stacy Bernet, a class participant.

She’s hoping to learn about some of those life hurdles, nobody really takes time to teach you about.

Like renting your first apartment.

Adulting 101 even covers sewing.

“We’re going to use some of our tools here like our sewing machine and fix a hem and talk about how you can repair those clothes you love instead of having to get rid of them,” says Genereaux-Maddox.

They also cover cooking.

“We’re teaching the casserole basics and how to mold that to make it however you want,” says Genereaux-Maddox.

A class that’s giving students the means to continue building their lives in our local communities.

“I’m hoping that they can take a skill that they use in their life and help them get through a new situation with something they picked up or something they learned and help them feel more confident in making new decisions,” says Genereaux-Maddox.
