Hometown Tourist: Gather DIY Studio in Harbor Springs

Gather in downtown Harbor Springs is a festive DIY studio where people can gather and get cozy with the arts.

David Lyden and Erin Malone take you to the modern community space with a lot of character for tonight’s Hometown Tourist.

“I kept thinking about ways that I could get involved in the community and ways I could be around more people more often and that’s kind of how this started,” Stephanie Baker, owner of Gather said.

Stephanie is a well-known photographer, but days spent shooting and editing she felt she was losing out on being in touch with the community, so Gather studio came to life.

“It’s a place where people in the community can come learn a new craft, get involved with the arts,” Stephanie said.

Today the craft is string art, but there are so many things to learn here, and for all ages too.

From painting and ink, art for kids, to wall hangings and shibori dying for adults. But, the kick here is that the classes are taught by the community as well.

“If anybody is ever interested in teaching I want them to approach me because I want them to have all the things and all the crafts to be represented here just because I don’t know how to teach them or how to make them I would still like them to be here,” Stephanie said.

And that openness goes for suggesting a class too, here, the overarching theme is togetherness and creativity and you can really feel it when you visit

“I’ve made new friends. I’ve made so many cool, new relationships from meeting people at classes and then the relationship extends beyond that one class and into your own life all the time,” she said.

And she’s spreading the art outside of this trendy gathering space, if you can’t make it to a class? She makes kits for some and sells them online, or for people to take home after they try it out in the studio.

“I want to be a community space. I want everyone to feel like they have a place here,” Stephanie said.
