Man Pleads Guilty to Littering After Debris From Destroyed Boat Washes Up On Shore

The man whose boat was destroyed while on shore in Mason County has taken a plea deal.

The prosecutor says Randall West pleaded guilty to littering, and must pay more than $260,000 in fines and restitution.

Last April, West was traveling from Pentwater to Traverse City when his boat started to take on water.

West had to ground the boat in Lake Michigan off Ludington State Park.

Strong winds and waves destroyed the boat, and the debris washed up on shore.

The U.S. Coast Guard also inspected the boat in 2015 and decided it was at risk of discharging fuel and oil into the water.

In exchange for West’s guilty plea, a charge of reckless operation of a vessel was dismissed.
