Psychologist Accused of Scamming Insurance Co, Using Money For Future Resort
The owner of the Swan House and planned Swan Resort in Manistee County, accused of scamming an insurance company out of $4.5 million.
Paul Smith was a psychologist in Macomb County until his license was suspended earlier this year.
Smith is now facing federal charges, accused of billing Blue Cross Blue Shield and transferring some of that money to the potential Swan Resort in Arcadia Township.
The indictment says almost $500,000 going towards the resort Smith planned to build came from tests he never even performed at his office.
The indictment shows five documented instances where he transferred payments of $99,000 from his office to the Swan Resort.
The indictment alleges that from January 2015 to February 2018, the insurance company paid Smith over $4.5 million as a result of his claims for neuropsychological and psychological testing.
It also says that “most if not all of those claims were false in that the patients never received the testing described by smith in the claims”.
We did also learn that his license is suspended for things like lack of good moral character and unethical business practice.
