Four paws have joined the Sheriff’s Department in Manistee County.

The newest officer is 18-months-old and a Purebred German Shepherd.

Beno came all the way from Poland and after a six week training course in Eaton Rapids he’s here in Manistee with Deputy Sheriff Brandon Gillispie.

“When Beno’s at home he’s just an ordinary dog,” says Deputy Sheriff Brandon Gillispie.

At work, Beno’s four paws serve alongside Manistee County Sheriff’s Deputies as their newest and furriest team member.

“He can turn on the switch to work and once he gets in the patrol car and gets his collar on he knows what time it is,” says Gillispie.

A job earned after two hundred hours of training.

Now at eighteen-months-old, this Purebred German Shepherd has transformed into Deputy Sheriff Gillispie’s partner in crime-fighting.

“The dogs are used for everything, whether its narcotics detection, tracking, apprehension article searches, school searches, building searches or anything,” says Gillispie.

Being only the fourth K9 here in three decades, Beno was imported from Central Poland and was chosen by a trainer for Gillispie.

“Just the training alone and purchasing the dog is $12,500,” says Gillispie.

Money well spent to welcome the new officer with dual purposes.

“It’s a great tool to take into schools to get kids involved in police and law enforcement,” says Gillispie. “It’s also good for me because it’s another partner I have at all times in my vehicle right with me as I patrol.”
