4 Your Information: DIY Car AC Fix

Driving on a hot summer day can go from comfortable to miserable when the AC dies.

But if the problem is the AC refrigerant, here is a step-by-step solution:

Step 1

Pop your hood and locate the low pressure valve, marked with an ‘l’ on its cap, atop a metal line toward the back of the engine compartment.

Step 2

Turn the car on and switch the AC to full blast to ensure the rest of your system is working (meaning the AC Condenser’s pulley is spinning).

Step 3

Turn the car off and attach the hose of your AC refill kit to the valve. You should hear a click.

Step 4

Turn the car on, again with AC at full and take an initial pressure reading using the gauge provided with your kit.

If it’s below the recommended level, which can be found in the directions on the can, commence filling!

Step 5

Shaking the can every few seconds as you depress the trigger, pause every so often to get a pressure reading to ensure you don’t overfill your system.

Step 6

Detach and run the AC. It should be cold. If it isn’t, consult a mechanic.
