All Women Airplane Race Coming to Wexford County Airport

The Wexford County Airport is welcoming the Air Race Classic this week, an all women cross-country airplane race!

Fifty five airplanes are stopping in Cadillac to perform high-speed flybys, before continuing their race to Maine.

This year the competition is honoring the 75th anniversary of WASP, or Women Airforce Service Pilots.

WASP veteran Jane Doyle of Grand Rapids fearlessly served our country in World War II.

She’s in Cadillac supporting fellow female pilots.

“We have gotten a lot of recognition just in the last few years, so I am honored to do it. But I want to do it because the WASP program wasn’t recognized at that time, and now there is women in every branch of the service,” said Jane.

WASP pilots weren’t widely recognized until they received a Congressional Gold Medal in 2010.
