TCAPS Launches New E911 System To Increase Safety, Reduce Response Time

Traverse City Area Public Schools will make improvements to increase safety and reduce first responder response time in an emergency.

To follow compliance standards that start at the end of 2019, TCAPS will be installing an e911 system on their phones, more than a year ahead of schedule.

Some employee and school phone numbers will change, in order to help 911 know exactly where someone is in the school.

“When we focus on safety and security this is something that just makes sense for us to do,” said associated superintendent of finance and operations Christine Thomas-Hill. “We have a lot of buildings, some of them are very large, you could be delaying response time by quite a bit when you walk into a larger building and nobody knows where to go.”

And this new system will help prevent that confusion.

Buildings/staff that will experience a complete change in numbers (including school offices) are:

  • Central Grade School
  • Central High School
  • Eastern Elementary School
  • Montessori at Glenn Loomis
  • Oak Park Silver Lake Elementary School
  • Traverse Heights Elementary School
  • Westwoods Elementary School
