Congressman Jack Bergman Introduces Bill That Would Allow Agencies to Resume Killing Cormorants

A bill was introduced by Northern Michigan’s representative Jack Bergman that would allow government agencies to continue killing double crested cormorants.

The U.S. House Committee on Natural Resources held a hearing centered around the issue Monday in Alpena.

Sporting groups say cormorants hurt the populations of prized sport fish, but critics say the number of fish affected is exaggerated.

The lethal control measures were stopped in 2016 after a judge said the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service didn’t do enough research on if further efforts were needed.
