Hook & Hunting: Kids’ Fishing Derby At Young State Park

It is time to grab your fishing poles!

State parks all across Michigan are having a free fishing weekend, but the Young State Park in Charlevoix County is going a step further with a kids fishing derby.

Kids from all over the area can head over to the park to compete for prizes for the biggest fish, the most fish caught and many more.

The pond will be stocked with hundreds of catfish, bass, bluegill and all sorts of fish for young anglers to catch.

The best part is that you don’t need a recreation permit or a fishing license to go to the park or join the event.

Organizers say events like this prepare young people for a lifetime of rewarding fishing.

“The point is just to get kids out, engaged in fishing and potentially make future anglers who would in turn buy fishing licenses and fish as they grow up. Seeing a kid catch their fish, possibly their first fish in their entire life, the joy on their face is something hard to capture,” says derby coordinator, Devin Burke.

Young State Park will have fishing poles available for kids who don’t have their own gear.

The event takes place June 9 at 10 a.m.
