We are half way through Smart Commute in Traverse City.

This is the 24th year in a row.

Organizers say that makes it the longest running Smart Commute Week in the State of Michigan.

It’s a week-long event — during which, people are encouraged to ditch their cars, and consider new ways to get around town.

Take a look at some of the people choosing to ride their bikes or walk to work this morning.

Some local restaurants, like Raduno, are offering free breakfasts for smart commuters this week.

“Smart Communte is about community health, it’s about getting people active, it’s about reducing the parking pressures we have in town there’s an economic impact so people are coming out and going about their daily activities,” said Brian Beauchamp, outreach and program director.

Smart commute week also applies to public transportation.

“Wednesday, June 6, is a day that’s dedicated to public transit, we’re doing two different things, our new bay line route will be running, we are on a doing a demo of that so people can hop on that and ride that for free, and our city loop routes that run in and around Traverse City are also gonna be free to ride,” said Eric Lingaur, with Bay Area Transportation Authority.

Smart Commute week runs through Friday.
