Group Challenges Nestle’s Permit to Pump More Water in Osceola County

The DEQ decided to allow Nestle to pump more water from Osceola County, and now a group has submitted a petition to challenge that permit.

Michigan Citizens for Water Conservation submitted the petition Friday against the DEQ.

This comes after the DEQ approved Nestle’s application to remove 400 gallons of water per minute from an Osceola Township aquifer.

Previously, Nestle had only been able to withdraw 250 gallons per minute.

The conservation group claims the DEQ’s review of the site didn’t take into consideration the environmental consequences of withdrawing more water, arguing its decision to grant Nestle additional access was illegal.

The case could go to trial if it’s not resolved.
