Traverse City Community Honors Fallen Service Members on Memorial Day

Throughout Northern Michigan and around the country, people set aside time on Monday to honor those who sacrificed their lives for our freedom.

In Traverse City, hundreds of people gathered for a special Memorial Day ceremony at the Veteran’s Memorial Park, where groups of veterans were welcomed one by one.

During the ceremony the American flag was raised by the U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City, the Kingsley High School choir sang and the Gettysburg Address was recited by a local Boy Scout.

It was also a special day for Gold Star mother Vickie Hays as she presented the wreath while remembering her son Justin, who lost his life in Iraq in 2012 after seven years of service.

“I decided it’s going to be a happy Memorial Day to me and I’m not going to be sad,” she says. “I’m going to think of the happy memories and be respectful to him.”

The ceremony ended with a rifle salute from the National Guard and Taps.
