Man Serving Prison Time for Stabbing Teen to Death to be Resentenced for 4th Time

The man serving prison time for stabbing a northern Michigan girl to death and burying her in sand will be resentenced for a fourth time.

Robert Schwander is currently serving 40 to 70 years in prison for stabbing 16-year-old Carly Lewis to death in 2011.

He was convicted of second-degree murder in 2011.

The state appeals court says he will now be resentenced in the Grand Traverse County court for a fourth time.

“I think it’s unfortunate that the family has been put through so many sentencing proceedings. One is enough for any person,” says Grand Traverse County prosecuting attorney Bob Cooney.

The appeals court says the judges repeatedly failed to explain why Schwander’s sentencing exceeded guidelines.

The court says the punishment is “unreasonable and disproportionate.”
