Portage Lake Another Step Closer to Saving Crumbling Channel

A Manistee County lake is another step closer to saving its crumbling channel.

Tuesday the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said a Sault Ste. Marie company will be responsible for dredging a channel along Portage Lake in Onekama.

Last year the army corps said the channel linking Onekama to Lake Michigan was at risk of collapsing.

The Army Corps is putting $6.25 million dollars toward the repair.

The company doing the dredging will get part of that money.

Dredging in Portage Lake is set to start May 14 and be done by Sept. 21.

Manistee Harbor will also be part of this project.
