Traverse City Man Falls Victim to IRS Scam

A Traverse City man sent about $67,000 to someone claiming to be the IRS, and police say it was all a scam.

Police say the man was receiving threatening phone calls and text messages from someone claiming to be the IRS.

The person said the man would be arrested if he didn’t send money.

Over a month, the man wired or sent money through cashier’s checks to California, Virginia and Illinois.

The Traverse City Police Department is looking into this with the Department of Homeland Security.

They want to remind everyone that the IRS will never call you demanding money.
