Hook & Hunting: Fishing Net Size Restrictions

Legislation passed in Lansing simplifies fishing regulations for anglers this spring, especially those looking to catch steelhead.

It removes a net size restriction.

Before, handles longer than 14 inches couldn’t be used April-June on certain trout streams.

Now they can.

The regulation created a safety issue with fisherman heaving to lean so far over the side of their boat.

“Probably dozens of calls every spring about this particular regulation, and lot of anglers were very frustrated with it because, you know, again of that safety issue. So we’re glad that we’re finally able to get this one off the books, and it’ll make things a little easier and safer for anglers,” said Mark Tonello, DNR fisheries biologist.

The 2018 Michigan Fishing Guide was printed before the law went into effect, but it has been removed from the online guide.
