Facebook Testimony Takeaway; Social Media Companies Need More Oversight

In the wake of the privacy scandal surrounding Facebook, lawmakers are now trying to figure out how to regulate social media companies.

Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has now wrapped up two days of hearings on Capitol Hill.

His company is facing intense scrutiny from both the House and Senate.

Lawmakers grilled him on how personal information from millions of Facebook users got into the hands of British consulting firm Cambridge Analytica, and how Russians were able to use the social network to meddle in the 2016 presidential election.

Members of the house energy and commerce committee are now suggesting social media companies need more oversight.

The House Committee Chairman says the panel will also be looking into how other tech companies are handling security.

Zuckerberg reassured lawmakers his company will continue combing through thousands of apps that utilize Facebook to make sure they are not misusing people’s data.
