Campers Find Missing Manistee Teen
A missing Manistee County teen has been found!
And it’s all thanks to some campers.
Manistee County deputies tell us 16-year-old Garrett Sheaks went missing Monday.
But deputies say he was found at Orchard Beach State Park in Manistee Township around 9 p.m. Friday.
“We were getting ready to play cards, we were just sitting here. I got up for a moment, and then my son Jacob said, hey, dad, there is someone knocking at the door,” says Mike Major, who is camping at the park.
Major and his family are on spring break and had just checked into the Orchard Beach State Park Camp Site.
“I started hollering out and a gentleman I couldn’t see said he couldn’t feel his feet,” says Major.
That’s when Mike called 911.
“The dispatcher said this is a missing child we have had and I asked if everything was okay with him and can I let him in because I’m with my wife and kids. They said no he’s a missing kid go ahead and let him in, so I brought him in we had him sit there by the heater and put his feet on that,” says Major.
Garrett Sheaks told Mike that he had been taking shelter in the bathroom near the campsite.
Minutes later, police showed up.
“We don’t know how long he had been at that location, no reasons yet, still in the preliminary stages of finding out why,” says Manistee County Sgt. Paul Woroniak.
We spoke to Garrett’s mom this morning.
She tells us Sheaks is in Devos Hospital recovering from hypothermia and frost bite.
The Major family is happy they could reunite the two.
“We kind of got emotional and we did read the article about him and it said he’s 16, my son is 14 and my other one is 12 so anything about a kid missing for a few days, you kind of cry. And when the ambulance and officer started talking to him, the mom came and to hear here excitement and nervousness, it makes you want to cry a little bit because she was so happy he was alive,” says Major.
