Dark Sky Coast Association Announces Plans to Dissolve

An Emmet County dark sky park could be left hanging in the balance after the Dark Sky Coast Association announced plans to dissolve.

The nonprofit organization, which was created in 2013 to provide support for the Headlands International Sky Park announced its plans to disband in a letter to Emmet County commissioners Thursday.

The DSCA board cited several issues leading to its decision including the county’s decision to bar the organization from using county facilities to raise money to help cover operating expenses and recruit members.

According to the DSCA, it has since been unable to recruit new members or raise enough money from the public to allow it to continue functioning as a nonprofit.

Over the past five years, the organization has raised more than $270,000 for the Headlands International Dark Sky Park.
