Hook & Hunting: New Fishing Licenses

In a few days you’re going to need a new license to go fishing in Michigan.

And there are two ways you can go about getting one: in person by heading to a local license retailer, the DNR customer service center, or using their e-license system.

You’ll need the new license by this Sunday, April 1 to continue fishing statewide.

Most inland lakes fishing opens up April 28.

Matt Hartman, manager at the Northern Angler, says it’s not too early to get ready.

And if you’re yearning to get out now, there are some options.

“The opener is April 28 but there’s trout fishing right now, there’s steal head fishing and once the ice comes off we’ll catch bass early season if you want it as well so don’t be afraid. You know if you need to get out of the cabin and you have spring fever, come on in we’ll get you set up and tell you where to go,” Hartman said.

And a reminder that if you catch a lake sturgeon or muskellunge, you’re now required to report it within 24 hours to the DNR.
